As the weather warms up and the likelihood of snow decreases, there may be more cars on the road or parked outside. And while the change in weather is convenient for driving, it may leave more cars vulnerable to theft.
Every year, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) releases a list detailing the vehicles that were most frequently stolen in Canada. The IBC also releases lists of the vehicles most frequently stolen in each province. Last year, the cars most often stolen ranged from province to province. For instance, Ontario saw high-end luxury SUVs as the most commonly stolen vehicle in the province.

Protect your vehicle
Cars can be stolen for many reasons including to be shipped overseas to be sold to consumers, to be used for parts, or to be used to commit another crime. You can’t control whether your car is targeted, but you can make sure to take the appropriate precautions against theft. Below are some tips on how to keep your vehicle safe:
- Never leave your car running when it is unattended.
- Park your vehicle in well-lit areas.
- Always close the windows and lock the doors after parking your car.
- Ensure that valuables and packages are stored in the trunk, out of sight.
- Try to keep your car in a garage overnight.
- When you park, don’t leave personal information, including insurance and ownership documents, in the glove box.
What does this mean for auto insurance?
What some Canadians may not realize is that the likelihood of your vehicle being stolen is a factor often used to determine your auto insurance rates and premiums.
Other factors that can affect the cost of your insurance premiums include the location you’re driving in, what you’re using your car for, the number of vehicles you’re insuring, the type of vehicle you’re insuring, and the list of drivers who will be operating the vehicle, as driver history can have an impact.
